Frequently asked questions.
What is Venetian Plaster?
Venetian plaster is a handcrafted wall and surface finish made from natural materials such as lime and fine marble dust. Applied in multiple thin layers, it creates a surface with depth, movement and subtle variation, resulting in a finish that feels both refined and enduring. Unlike paint, Venetian plaster interacts with light, revealing tonal shifts and texture that give spaces warmth and character. Each application is unique, shaped by the hand and the conditions of the space, making it a timeless choice for both contemporary and traditional interiors.
Where can Venetian Plaster be used?
Venetian Plaster is suitable for both interior and certain exterior applications. It can be applied across a wide range of surfaces, including walls, splash-backs and ceilings and lends itself particularly well to architectural features such as curved walls, columns, arches, staircases, fireplaces and feature walls. Its versatility allows it to move seamlessly through a space, creating continuity and depth.
What is Microcement?
Microcement is a cement-based surface finish applied in multiple thin layers to walls, floors, benches, wet areas and more. Once sealed, it forms a seamless, non-porous surface without grout lines, resulting in a clean, continuous finish that feels both contemporary and refined. It can be applied over a variety of existing substrates, including tiles which reduces the need for demolition and makes it a practical and more sustainable alternative to traditional finishes. Microcement is low maintenance and naturally resistant to mould, making it particularly well suited to bathrooms, kitchens and high-use areas. In addition to our standard microcement, we offer a high-performance system with increased durability. This advanced finish is used for floors, bathtubs and commercial settings such as retail and hospitality spaces, where enhanced strength, longevity and resilience are required. Each system is carefully selected based on the demands of the space and applied to ensure a considered, long-lasting result.
What finishes can Carlier & Co achieve?
The possibilities are virtually limitless. Whether you are drawn to one of our rmain collection finishes or have a completely new concept in mind, we work closely with you to develop a surface that is unique to your space. Through this collaborative process, we explore texture, tone, layering and surface techniques to create a result that responds to the architecture, light and character of its surroundings. Each finish is carefully considered for the project at hand. From smooth, polished surfaces to subtle, tactile textures or more expressive, layered applications, finishes can be selected from our curated collection or crafted from scratch to suit your vision. Every finish is inherently bespoke, whether drawn from our collection or developed specifically for your project, it is designed to give your space a refined sense of identity, depth and atmosphere that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
Can Carlier & Co create colours outside the standard colour chart?
Yes. In addition to our curated colour range, we create custom colours tailored to each project. Shades are developed by our craftsmen through a collaborative process, ensuring the final colour reflects the vision and atmosphere of the space.
Can I order samples for my project?
A selection of samples is available to view in our studio by appointment. Once your project is confirmed through acceptance of the quotation and payment of the deposit, project-specific samples can be produced at no extra cost. Please note that samples are not provided for projects below a certain value. Alternatively, if you wish to obtain a small sample, these may be purchased for a fee.
Does Venetian Plaster or Microcement crack or become damaged?
Both Venetian plaster and microcement are durable, long-lasting finishes when applied to a sound substrate. However, as with any applied surface, cracking can occur if the underlying substrate is compromised, for example, if plasterboard or sheeting has shifted. This is a structural issue that must be addressed before installation. When existing damage is present, our team will assess the surface and advise whether repairs or a full reapplication are required. Additionally, like any surface, finishes can be affected by impact or rigorous use. Heavy knocks, dropped objects, or frequent friction may cause marks or wear over time. Proper care and attention will help maintain the integrity and appearance of the surface, but normal wear and tear is a natural occurrence for any material.
